Calling Out All The Marthas: A Timely Message on Rest in Jesus

Pacific Rim Christian University recently experienced a decisive moment of spiritual reflection during a chapel service led by sophomore student Haggai Lekka. His sermon, "Calling Out All The Marthas," was based on the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38–42. With passion and clarity, Haggai encouraged the student body to pause in their busy lives and find proper rest in Jesus.

The Message: Choosing the Better Part

Haggai’s sermon centered on the well-known narrative of Jesus visiting the home of Mary and Martha. While Martha busied herself with serving, Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to His teaching. Haggai highlighted how Martha’s well-meaning busyness caused her to miss the opportunity to be in Christ's presence. He exhorted students to reflect on their lives, asking, “Are we too busy doing things for Jesus that we forget to spend time with Him?”

Drawing from Jesus’ words, “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her,” Haggai reminded students that while serving is valuable, resting in Christ’s presence is essential for spiritual renewal and peace.

Encouraging Rest in a Busy Season

Haggai’s message resonated deeply with students as midterms approach and academic pressures mount. He urged them to intentionally carve out moments of stillness to reconnect with God through prayer, worship, and meditation on His Word. “Resting in Jesus isn’t about neglecting responsibilities,” he explained. “It’s about prioritizing what matters most—your relationship with Him.”

Building Community Through Reflection

The sermon also sparked meaningful conversations among students from various denominational backgrounds. After the service, small groups gathered to discuss how to apply this message daily. Many shared how they’ve struggled to balance ministry, studies, and personal time with God, finding encouragement in knowing they’re not alone.

A Student-Led Movement of Faith

Haggai’s sermon exemplifies the heart of Pacific Rim Christian University’s chapel services: providing students a platform to grow as leaders while fostering spiritual growth within the community. His ability to connect biblical truths with real-life applications inspired many to reevaluate their priorities and seek deeper intimacy with Christ.

Moving Forward: Resting in Him

As the semester continues, Haggai’s exhortation serves as a timely reminder for all students to pause, reflect, and rest in Jesus. In a world that often glorifies busyness, Pacific Rim Christian University remains committed to cultivating an environment where students can grow academically and spiritually, learning that proper rest is found at Christ's feet.

Through this impactful message, Haggai Lekka has called out all the "Marthas" among us—not to shame but to encourage us all to choose the better part: resting in the presence of our Savior.
